Conductivity sensors act as a proxy for salinity by measuring the total concentration of ions in solution (i.e., a measure of water's capability to pass electrical flow). Conductivity in water is affected by the presence of inorganic dissolved salts such as chloride, nitrate, sulfate, and phosphate a nions (ions that carry a negative charge) or sodium, magnesium, calcium, iron, and aluminum cations (ions that carry a positive charge).
