This webservice is designed for beach goers to easily view beach/surf zone forecasts and hazard information provided by WFOs. Surf Forecasts includes Beaches, Rip Current Risk, Surf Height, UV Index Risk, Water Temperature Weather Forecast, waterspouts, severe weather, High Temperature, Winds and Tides (High and Low Times).

The Marine Beach Forecast Web Service provides Day 1 and Day 2 marine and beach forecast layers for Weather Forecast Offices (WFOs) covering the Great Lakes, U.S. coastlines, and territories. The service includes two forecast layers for each WFO:

Beach Forecast Day1 Layers: Contains the above forecast parameters for the Day 1 time period (1200 UTC today through 1200 UTC the following day). These layers are turned on by default.

Beach Forecast Day2 Layers: Contains the above forecast parameters for the Day 2 time period (1200 UTC the following day to 1200 UTC the day after that).

To make the most of the Marine Beach Forecast Web Service, use the Beach Forecast Day1 Layers for your current and same-day conditions. The Beach Forecast Day2 layers will help you plan for the next day.

How to Use These Layers:

For Current and Same-Day Conditions (up to 24 hours): Use the Beach Forecast Day1 Layers, as this provides the most accurate and immediate forecast.

For the Next Day (24-48 hours): Use the Beach Forecast Day2 Layers to check forecast conditions for the following day.

Marine and Beach Forecast Conditions and Risk Provided By This Service Include:

Swim Risk - Swim risk is the risk based on the threat of high waves, dangerous currents, and other hazardous conditions of the water. Beach hazard statements provide additional details on high swim risk days. Some of these risks include outlet currents, channel currents, longshore currents, structural currents and cold water.

Rip Currents - Rip currents are powerful, channeled currents of water flowing away from shore. They typically extend from the shoreline, through the surf zone, and past the line of breaking waves. Rip currents can occur at any beach with breaking waves.

Winds- includes wind direction, and speed.

Thunderstorms- Thunderstorms can turn calm waters into dangerous and rough seas with risks like hail, winds of 58 mph or more, and lightning. Severe thunderstorms may cause wind damage, hail up to 1 inch, and microbursts, which can uproot trees. Always stay safe: “When Thunder Roars, Go Indoors” and stay there until 30 minutes after the last clap of thunder.

Waterspouts- Waterspouts are whirling columns of air and water mist, categorized as fair weather or tornadic. Fair weather waterspouts form in calm conditions and are less dangerous, while tornadic waterspouts are dangerous tornadoes on water that form in severe thunderstorms. Stay safe by avoiding close proximity, and if one moves onshore, it may be classified as a tornado.

Swim Risk Levels Collected (Great Lakes):

Low - The risk to swimmers is low, however, life-threatening conditions may still occur, especially near groins, jetties, reefs, and piers.
